The City of Marshall encompasses an area of approximately 5.6 square miles and has a population of 7,459 (2000 U.S. Census). Located 45 miles southwest of Lansing, 178 miles east of Chicago, 100 miles west of Detroit and 90 miles north of Fort Wayne, IN, Marshall is conveniently located at the crossroads of I-69 and I-94.
The City of Marshall operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The Mayor is elected for a two-year term and six council members are elected for four-year terms. The City Council appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, City Clerk/Treasurer and Assessor, who serve at the pleasure of the Council. All other department heads are appointed by the City Manager.
All legislative and policy making authority of the City is vested in, exercised, and determined by the City Council. The Council is responsible for the adoption of the annual budget, appointment of members to boards and committees, adoption of ordinances and appointment of the City Manager, among various other duties.
